Independence Day 2019 & Cultural Day Celebration

1st October is a national public holiday in Nigeria. It is a day that marks Nigeria's independence from British colonial rule. It isalso a unique cultural day where all tribes, cultures and backgrounds unite  with a common sense of purpose to stay together, live together and remind themselves of the aims and struggles of its founding fathers.

 

Premiere Academy has a tradition of marking the Independence Day with a cultural day event.This is an event when every student, staff member and school officialappears in their best cultural attire to grace and mark the occasion.The essence is to remind ourselves of our rich multi-tribal, multi-ethnic and multi-cultural backgrounds. It also serves to highlight the points that bring us together as a peaceful and loving nation, irrespective of language, cultural or ethnic differences.

 

The event took place in the multi-purpose hall of the Academy at 10:00am. Every student showed up in their own unique cultural attire along with the staff and officials of the school. The bright and colourful array of traditional costumes and attireadorned the school environment as students and staff marched into the multipurpose hall in procession.

Leading the march were the school Principal, Head of Learning and Head of Pastoral,Mr Rowland Eno, Mr Chris Akinsowon and MrAdesanmi respectively.  In line with the tone of the day, they too appeared in their unique cultural attire that reflected the mood of the occasion, independence and pride in their rich cultures.

As participants in the event assembled in the hall, the opening prayer was given by the school Chaplain, and the Principal opened the floor with an ‘Independence Day’ speech. The crowd was entertained as students took turns to showcase cultural dances and drama that reflected the aims and challenges of our country over the last 59 years since independence.

After a remarkable time with an added touch of historical perspective, the programme ended on a happy note at 12:00 noon and students returned to their hostels to continue the celebrations.
